UniFi G6 Entry: Video Doorbell with Face Recognition, License Plate Detection, and Access Control
The UniFi G6 Entry is Ubiquiti's first doorbell with integrated face recognition and license plate detection. It works simultaneously as a UniFi Protect camera and a UniFi Access reader with NFC, Face Unlock, and Apple/Google Wallet.
More Than a Doorbell
Ubiquiti has introduced the G6 Entry, a doorbell that does far more than ring and show a camera feed. The device combines three functions in a single enclosure: video doorbell, surveillance camera, and access control reader. If you already run UniFi Protect and UniFi Access, you get a device that integrates seamlessly into both systems.
What sets the G6 Entry apart is the combination of face recognition and license plate recognition (LPR) with a built-in Access reader. You can open the front door not only via app or NFC card but also by face. This works directly through UniFi Access, without needing a separate card reader at the door.
Camera and Image Quality
The G6 Entry has a 5 MP sensor with a 180-degree diagonal field of view (100 degrees horizontal, 135 degrees vertical). That is a wide angle that covers the entire entrance area. IR illumination with a 5-meter range handles night recordings.
The camera is managed like any other UniFi Protect camera in the Protect app. Recordings are stored on the local NVR (Network Video Recorder) — the Cloud Gateway, Dream Machine, or a UNVR. There is no cloud subscription and no monthly fees, which sets Ubiquiti apart from most competitors.
AI Detection in Detail
Inside, a quad-core processor runs AI detections locally on the device. The G6 Entry detects people, vehicles, and animals. In addition, face recognition can identify and name known faces within UniFi Protect.
License plate recognition is designed for driveways and garage entrances. Combined with UniFi Access, you can set up automatic gate opening: when the camera recognizes a registered license plate, the gate or barrier can open automatically.
Access Control with UniFi Access
The built-in Access reader supports several methods to unlock the door:
- NFC cards and key fobs
- Apple Wallet and Google Wallet
- Face Unlock (face recognition)
- Mobile Unlock (via the UniFi Access app)
- TouchPass
For the access control features to work, you need a UniFi Access Hub. That is the central controller that triggers the door lock and manages all access logic. Both UniFi Protect and UniFi Access must also be installed on the console.
If you only want to use the G6 Entry as a video doorbell with Protect, you do not need the Access Hub. The camera functions and intercom work without Access.
Weather Resistance
The G6 Entry carries an IP55 rating against dust and water jets and an IK07 rating for light mechanical impacts. Power is supplied via PoE+ (802.3at), which simplifies installation because only a single network cable needs to run to the door. Power and data travel over the same cable.
Three Models Compared
Ubiquiti currently offers three doorbells that differ in feature set and price:
-
Doorbell Lite (approx. 99 USD): Compact PoE doorbell with camera and intercom. No Access features, no NFC reader. For anyone who just wants a camera feed and notifications.
-
G6 Entry: The middle ground. 5 MP camera with AI detection, face recognition, LPR, and built-in Access reader. No touchscreen, but all relevant access methods including NFC and Face Unlock.
-
G6 Pro Entry: The top model with a 12 MP sensor, 3-inch touchscreen configurable via the Interface Designer, and all G6 Entry features in a premium enclosure.
Who Should Consider the G6 Entry?
The G6 Entry is aimed at users who are already in the UniFi ecosystem and want to integrate their access control into a single system. If you already use UniFi Protect for video surveillance and perhaps UniFi Access for door locks, the G6 Entry gives you a device that combines both at the front door.
The major advantage over Ring, Google Nest, and others: there is no subscription. All recordings stay local on your own NVR. AI detection runs on the device itself. And there is no cloud dependency where third parties could potentially access video data.
If you do not yet use UniFi Access, keep in mind that the access features require an Access Hub. That is an additional investment that mainly pays off when you want to manage multiple doors or access points.
