Typical Project

Logistics Centre with 3,000 m2 Warehouse Space near Basel

Situation

A logistics company near Basel operates a 3,000 m2 warehouse with 12-metre ceilings. 15 employees use handheld scanners for order picking, but the WiFi regularly dropped out. When moving between hall sections, scanners lost their connection, leading to mis-bookings in the WMS.

Solution

Digital Runners installed a UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra, two Switch Pro 24 PoE units and 6 U7 Outdoor access points mounted on the ceiling for maximum range. Fast Roaming (802.11r) was enabled so scanners switch seamlessly between APs. The WMS received its own VLAN. Four G5 Bullet cameras monitor the loading docks and outdoor area.

Result

WiFi coverage is now seamless throughout the entire hall. Handheld scanners work without connection drops, and mis-bookings have decreased by 95%. Video surveillance protects goods and documents incoming and outgoing shipments. Investment: approximately CHF 7,500.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does UniFi WiFi work in tall warehouse halls?
Yes. With industrial-grade access points designed for long range and high ceilings, stable coverage is achieved even in halls 10–15 metres high.
Can barcode scanners be used without interruption throughout the warehouse?
Through seamless roaming (Fast Roaming / 802.11r), mobile devices automatically switch between access points without losing the connection. This is critical for scanners and handhelds.
How is the WMS (Warehouse Management System) connected?
The WMS is connected via its own VLAN, separated from the general network. This ensures communication between the WMS server and mobile scanners is reliable and secure.
What does a WiFi upgrade cost for a warehouse?
For a warehouse of 2,000-5,000 m2, the investment typically ranges between CHF 6,000 and CHF 12,000, depending on ceiling height, number of APs and desired camera coverage. An on-site survey is recommended.
How robust are the access points against forklifts and vibrations?
The APs are mounted on ceilings or steel beams, out of reach of forklifts. UniFi outdoor APs are designed for harsh environments and can easily withstand temperature fluctuations, dust and vibrations.
